| Sermon Notes #1006 PERCEPTION OR SEEING BY FAITH HEB 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. >>Satan and the world constantly dandle artificial pleasure, beauty and prosperity before our eyes to entertain our souls into a false security walking by sight. But of faith we read: HEB 11:1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. >>We read the history of the faith of the patriarchs in V:8-22 but V:23-31 tells us of the Exodus from Egypt that Abraham saw by faith over six hundred years before. GEN 15:13-14 And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance. >>The Great Sovereign even condescended to reveal to Abraham why He would wait His own appointed time!! GEN 15:15-16 And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full. >>The real lesson Scriptures teach with regard to seeing by faith is being faced with choosing between life and death JOH 12:24-25 Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. 25 He that loveth his life shall lose it; and he that hateth his life in this world shall keep it unto life eternal. >>This dying unto self and the world confronts every believer in the form of a choice who will you serve? JOH 12:26 If any man serve me, let him follow me; and where I am, there shall also my servant be: if any man serve me, him will my Father honour. >>By faith Moses "chose" to die unto the world rather than to live in the service of sin. HEB 11:24-25 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; >>Perception or seeing is the first concept of faith "the evidence of things not seen," HEB 11:1. >>This principle comes through in our text (V:23) where we read Moses' parents "saw." HEB 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. >>Perception as the first concept of faith comes through in V:26 in looking unto the reward. HEB 11:26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto [or was looking unto] the recompence of the reward. >>This same concept of perception comes through in V:27 in the word "seeing." HEB 11:27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible. >>The first concept of faith is " seeing him who is invisible," or " . . . believing that He is," and the second concept of faith is to trust Him for the reward of obedience. HEB 11:6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. >>The great reward of faith in the first place lies in our deliverance from the destructive power of the world Satan and sin. TIT 2:13-14 Looking for that blessed hope [which entails the first concept of faith], and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; 14 Who gave himself for us [and now see the reward the true believer is 'looking for' in that glorious appearing!!], that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works. >>The Exodus from Egypt by the mighty hand of God is the symbol or type of our redemption from all iniquity. 1CO 10:1-2 Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea; 2 And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea; >>Now see how this Exodus out of Egypt teaches the second concept of faith i.e., looking for the reward of deliverance from destruction by the obedience of faith in V:28. HEB 11:28 Through faith he kept the passover, and the sprinkling of blood [by the obedience of faith], lest he that destroyed the firstborn should touch them. >>The second concept is further established in the reward of obedience of faith as being delivered from being drowned in V: 29. HEB 11:29 By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. >>The second concept is further established in the reward of obedience of faith as delivering the enemy into their hand as the walls "fell down." In V:30. HEB 11:30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. >>The second concept is further established in the reward of obedience of faith as being delivered from perishing in V:31. HEB 11:31 By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. >>The third concept of the reward of faith is our deliverance from fear. >>See how this deliverance from fear was what enabled the acts of saving faith the words "because," in V:23 and "for" in V:26; and 27 furnish the explanation of the power of their faith. >>These verses open and close with references to threats from the king of Egypt The king's edict or command in V:23 and "the wrath of the king" in V:27. >>Our text reveals that the faith of Moses was not the first moving effect in the exodus from Egypt but the faith of his parents. HEB 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. >>The king of Egypt who did not know the Almighty had no faith to quell his fear EXO 1:9-10 And he said unto his people, Behold, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we: 10 Come on, let us deal wisely with them; lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there falleth out any war, they join also unto our enemies, and fight against us, and so get them up out of the land. >>Therefore, walking by sight and in the counsel of the ungodly he was used of the Lord to prepare the hearts of Israel to "look" and act "by faith" in departing from the bondage of Egypt. EXO 1:11-14 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh treasure cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and grew. And they were grieved because of the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigour: 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard bondage, in morter, and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field: all their service, wherein they made them serve, was with rigour. >>Through such hard bondage the Lord led His people to realize that the riches and the pleasures of Egypt were but a waist howling wilderness. DEU 32:9-11 For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance. 10 He found him in a desert land, and in the waste howling wilderness; he led him about, he instructed him, he kept him as the apple of his eye. 11 As an eagle stirreth up her nest, fluttereth over her young, spreadeth abroad her wings, taketh them, beareth them on her wings: 12 So the LORD alone did lead him, and there was no strange god with him. >>When the Lord stirs up the nest of His people in this waist howling wilderness they receive a faith's eye to see the emptiness of the riches of Egypt and are able to make a better choice. HEB 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. >>Our text reveals that the parents of Moses were faced with a very decisive choice They had to decide between what they saw by faith and what they could face by way of punishment from the king >>They had to choose between the obedience of faith looking unto the reward of redemption in the face of the wrath of the king. HEB 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. >>Moses was raised in the house of the King Pharaoh's Daughter Like his parents he had a very decisive choice to make and this is the choice every true believer has to make!!! >>Do we choose to be the son of Pharaoh's Daughter to enjoy sin for a season or call God's afflicted people our brethren? EXO 2:11-12 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren. 12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he slew the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. >>Such an account of Moses seems to depict Moses as having a good heart but an immature faith Yet the account of the book of Hebrews places Moses' choice as a monument of faith. >>It was not the faith of Moses that was in fault but God's people were not ready for deliverance!! ACT 7:25-28 For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not. 26 And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another? 27 But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? 28 Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday? >>If we choose to identify with God's true believers we need faith to see beyond the pleasures of this present life The central question we must ask ourselves where is our allegiance????? >>Is our allegiance with the god of this world or with Christ >> Our text says " . . . they saw he was a proper child." What did they see in him by faith?? just exactly what we read of him in HEB 11:24-26 By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; 25 Choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; 26 Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompence of the reward. >>The more we come out in support of the truth and the right the more we expose ourselves to the wrath of our spiritual enemies. 1PE 5:6-11 Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you. 8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour: 9 Whom resist stedfast in the faith, knowing that the same afflictions are accomplished in your brethren that are in the world. 10 But the God of all grace, who hath called us unto his eternal glory by Christ Jesus, after that ye have suffered a while, make you perfect, stablish, strengthen, settle you. 11 To him be glory and dominion for ever and ever. Amen. >>Spiritual perception is the key to the obedience of faith. JOS 24:14-15 Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. 15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. >>Our text says, HEB 11:23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. |
